This has all the elements I love -- crisp, sweet & hot, and quick and easy to prepare.
2 large cans (whole not sliced) water chestnuts, drained and rinsed
1 pound applewood-smoked bacon
3/4 cup ketchup
1 cup (packed) dark brown sugar
Hot pepper sauce, to taste (Frank's Hot Sauce)
May be done in advance: Wrap chestnuts in 1/2 to 1/3 piece of bacon. Hold each together with toothpick
The day of the event, arrange chestnuts in a single layer and bake at 400 degrees until bacon browns. Drain off bacon grease well.
In a bowl, mix ketchup, brown sugar and mix well. Pour over water chestnuts and bake until sauce is bubbly and tops of water chestnuts are slightly browned.
Note: Can be kept hot in a slow-cooker before serving.
